Arby's is testing venison sandwiches
Wish this was legal in VA. Our game regs are archaic, banning the sell of wild game. We should be able to buy and sell whatever meats we want.

I think what makes it legal is that it isn't "wild". The deer are farm raised.awesome guy wrote:Wish this was legal in VA. Our game regs are archaic, banning the sell of wild game. We should be able to buy and sell whatever meats we want.

That's not the way I understand the law in VA. Game status is what makes it game, not origin. Though their may be a loophole about processing it or something like that. I can buy venison jerky at Green Top. Not sure how they have it, but I've also asked various butchers about getting stuff like venison and they all said game status as the reason.

USN looks to be right about the farm raised aspect. Wild game is illegal to sell.

This is what I found about farm raised., down in the poorly formated part.

Not sure why the butchers here won't go the farm raised route. Maybe it's just cost prohibitive? Anyway, I'll hit Wegmans at lunch if they have venison. My sources are dried up so far this year. My hunting friends are having the same type of year I had fishing, the pits. I still have a couple pounds of venison burger from last year, but need some backstrap ASAP! I feel sorry for one of my buddies. He lost his job right at the start of hunting season, but set himself up to be able to hunt the entire season and not work. So he's been out like every day and has just 1 deer to show. He's seen a bunch, but can't get off a shot with the bow as they're walking up under him or there's too many leaves and branches still in the way. He should take something to trim the branches out of the way. Anyway, I need another source or I'm going to be stuck with pork chops all winter. I'm still not in my groove fishing, but hope to load up on speckled trout this weekend. We'll see.

Even wild game culled from outside the Commonwealth? That is archaic.awesome guy wrote:Wish this was legal in VA. Our game regs are archaic, banning the sell of wild game. We should be able to buy and sell whatever meats we want.

I don't know about that as I was wrong about the law, but understand the fear. When legal and common, poaching will increase. Or you get something like commercial catfish farming where "farm raised" is a fish caught in the James, stored in a pond in NC for 30 days, and then sold as "farm raised". It just need be on the farm for a month to call it home.

Well, they do have the meats.
My guess is it would be marketed similar to bison - a healthy alternative.

and it is! One of the best meats out there in my opinion. Though they're selling hind quarter, I want all the back strap I can get my hands on. Last year, I got into aging it for 3-4 weeks. Just wrap it in cheese cloth and set in the frig. The cloth prevents a rind from forming. Then slice it and dry it, grill it, or whatever. Simply the best.
