Tamir Rice Shows You Can Get Away With Murder

Certainly more complex than the headline but this story is pretty sickening. I can't imagine the number of errors that took place by the one to two officers on the scene.

I truly believe if the kid were white, he'd be alive, not because the officer is necessarily a bigot but because of subconscious bias on the perception of threat.

Sorry but the cops did nothing wrong and the kid's parent need to be in prison for the rest of their sorry lives. Image

Agreed 100%. THe chances are very good that they would not have rolled up on a white kid like that.

The dispatcher who did not relay to the officers that the caller said the suspect might be a child is the guiltiest party of all in my opinion. The officers can't be blamed for not having all of the information. The officers definitely could have handled it better though.

What did the parents do wrong?
They didn't tell him not to run around with a gun and point it at people.

SOmething he wasn't doing when the police cruiser came rolling up the curb.

Yeah, great point, when I was 12, I obeyed every rule my parents ever laid down.

These are honestly the most stupid posts I read on these boards. When I was 12 I got in a fight in school. I guess we could just blame my parents...

We can't have nice things as long as people keep pretending that white kids can run around and point gun replicas at cops without getting shot. In fact whites are overrepresented in cop shootings. Explain that one racists.

If he actually pointed the gun at the cop you might have a point. Watch the video again. The cop shot when the kid reached into his waistband. There was about 2 seconds from the time the cop rolled up to the shooting.

It is HIGHLY unlikely this would have happened to a white kid but keep applying your statistics if it makes you feel better.

Yep. Kid pointed a fake gun made to look like a real gun at a cop.

Image

If I was armed and he pointed that at me he'd be dead too.

Maybe if you guys keep repeating to yourselves that he pointed the gun at the cops, it'll magically come true. From the report:

"The gun was in the waistband of Tamir's pants. Sims writes that in the video it appears the boy's hands moved toward his waistband but it is unclear if he reached for the gun."

Right, because pointing a gun at a cop is exactly the same as not taking out the garbage.

Actually, we could. Did you instigate the fight?

If I was armed and someone reached for that fake gun in their waistband they'd be dead. Remember that the officer was called to the report of a male armed with a gun.

No. THat is part of the story. I posit that a white kid in the same situation would have been afforded more latitude. You can disagree if you want to but that doesn't mean it is not a valid part of the discussion.

The real screw up was with the dispatcher who didn't mention that the caller said it might be a kid. THat dispatcher should go down.

Watch that get repeated again and again. Even though he didn't point it.

You can't be ignorant to the fact that this happened in Detroit (edit: actually Cleveland, still a shirthole).

Fine. He pointed a gun at people and then reached for it when he saw a cop. Same difference. A Grand Jury agrees with me.

Just to be clear - your position is that when responding to a call of a man brandishing a gun, police should wait until a gunman is finished drawing and pointing the weapon at them before they neutralize him?
