Billions of Dollars still mismanaged under Obamacare

A report released by the Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General found that the federal government is unable to ensure that Obamacare subsidies are going to those who paid health insurance premiums. The report — entitled “CMS Could Not Effectively Ensure That Advance Premium Tax Credit Payments Made Under The Affordable Care Act Were Only For Enrollees Who Paid Their Premiums” — concluded that CMS has no process in place to verify whether subsidies were paid out in correct amounts to insurers.

“[The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services] could not ensure that [Advanced Premium Tax Credits] APTC payments made to [Qualified Health Plan] QHP issuers were only for enrollees who had paid their premiums,” the audit said. “Specifically, we found that CMS did not have an effective process in place to ensure that APTC payments were made only for enrollees who had paid their monthly premiums.”

The report comes in light of the inspector general’s findings last year, which revealed more mismanagement of taxpayer dollars — the agency could not verify $2.8 billion in subsidies that were doled out in the first four months of 2014.
