This is a fascinating read - re: internet bullying/porn
I honestly had no idea who Hunter Moore was until I read this article. This woman is impressive.
http://www.alternet.org/sex-amp-relatio ... page=0%2C0
How should we, as a society, deal with this kind of behavior? Should we pass laws against it? Should the individuals who abuse others by these means face criminal charges? Assuming it was your wife/daughter, should a baseball bat and a dark alley be an option?
Not a big fan of the anti-bullying campaign because I do think people are generally coddled and need to toughen up a bit, but this kind of stuff is really bad and needs to be dealt with. Thoughts?

I dunno. I doctored pics thought to be Houtex & posted them here for comedic effect. As such, I don't want to be a hypocrite when criticizing the guy Moore.
If it was my daughter, yeah...I'd want to do the baseball bat bit, but in reality would be more inclined to go the lawyer route (the former not likely being opportune in any scenario I could imagine).
Our liberal friends, in the name of consistency, might want to consider laws banning the internet.

So I put (the dead dog) on her doorstep!

Seems like half involve stealing pics from email accounts or photoshop. Those should be prosecuted as criminal for sure.Valencia Hokie wrote:I honestly had no idea who Hunter Moore was until I read this article. This woman is impressive.

But sending a pic to a romantic partner only to have them turn around and put it online? I agree about toughing people up. But this stuff ruins your life. It makes finding work harder, destabilizes relationships, and will create future drama from their kids as these pictures are eternal and forever discoverable. I think it goes beyond the pale of toughness. Criminal? I'm not sure because the pictures were sent/taken voluntarily. Disgusting and morally repugnant? Yep. Maybe the lesson is not sleeping around till marriage so embarrassing information isn't given to temporary acquaintances in your life? Or if making such sites criminal, only criminalize the linking to social media and home address/phone stuff.

That's amazing. I see what you're saying about anti-bullying legislation. Yes, it could lead to a flood of police involvement, criminal cases, and civil lawsuits, but this guy was extreme. Does applying thresholds work i.e., some parameters on how egregious the bullying has to be before it's legally actionable? Or, does applying thresholds offer bullies a clearly defined line they must toe to keep their activities just shy of actionable so they can continue with their destructive hobby?
Impressive woman. Oh, and ladies, DON'T take photos of yourself or pose for photos you wouldn't want your granny to see. I feel really sorry for the victims mentioned whose images were morphed or stolen from a doctor's office.

That is the question, IMO. Once you draw the line in something that is quite amorphous, you then tell people just how far they are allowed to go up to that line. I'm sure cases where the line needs to be further back will then be presented. And then we endlessly regress. That's why I like the bat, or caning option. I know it when I see it, then you get your tail whipped a plenty and hopefully you stop.Once wrote:... Damn. That was both gratifying AND uncomfortable to watch. I've only hit someone once my entire life and it was a reflex to something he did to me first. I shocked myself.

The only problem with that is who is the bully? Maybe the first lady and the original "bully" knew each other and she was responding to bullying from the first woman? If we were to walk up onto that event when the largest lady is beating down the "bully" then she's the "bully". My point is it's all relative. And when getting involved with other people's affairs, hard to assess who started it and who is responding. Kind of like what happens here or more so on the Old UWS. Someone says something silly and then someone else jumps in mocking them. Ironically looking silly themselves when another person jumps to mock the mocker and then it just goes on from there. What I'm babbling about is time doesn't start at second 0 of a video clip. There's often other stuff that's happened and it's hard impossible to know all context of the event. Then again, sometimes it is clear cutValencia Hokie wrote:That is the question, IMO. Maybe she did and it wasn't on the video, but the first lady doesn't seem to have defended herself. Assuming she didn't because it's not the video, the event likely would have ended if the first lady defended herself or said something. And if that didn't work, the third lady still could have still jumped in and set the second straight.

The other interesting concept is the Anonymous piece. Anonymous looks great when going after a guy like this but what happens when Anonymous goes after someone under false pretenses or because they don't like something that a target believes (like anti-gay marriage) - then they are no better than this Hunter Moore character.Valencia Hokie wrote:I honestly had no idea who Hunter Moore was until I read this article. Yes, that made me uncomfortable too. I wouldn't want my mythical daughter receiving a phone call from some nameless, faceless person offering to what? help? me take care of another nameless, faceless person who is stalking her via the Web. The whole thing smacks of a Dungeons and Dragons cloak and dagger game on steroids. It's a dark, very special episode of The Big Bang Theory.

Great point. And it's true of all "police" work, be it private citizens taking the role of vigilante or the government. We take on the responsibility to be wise and just when interfering with others. I think that is often lost, especially when the government is intervening.Florida Hokie wrote:The other interesting concept is the Anonymous piece. 1. When are these idiot kids going to learn that everything you put on the internet is forever, and could be potentially shown to everyone? Don't take topless pics of yourself and you don't have to worry about them ending up on the internet.Valencia Hokie wrote:I honestly had no idea who Hunter Moore was until I read this article. 2. The example in the story could hardly be equated to "bullying" - it's much worse IMO.
3. Bullying is an part of life and learning how to deal with it (or, dish it out) is an important life skill.

Agree. My only quibble is that you make "Anonymous" sound like some organized group when I think that's anything but the case.Florida Hokie wrote: The other interesting concept is the Anonymous piece. Re: This is a fascinating read - re: internet bullying/porn
It's being labeled as bullying because there are bulling tactics involved (like continuing against a cease and desist request because you know that people cannot afford the legal fees o fight it). Which is kind of my point. Being mean, at all, is now bullying. Much like any lack of self control in a kid is ADD or ADHD. Too little differentiation so that everything gets muddled into a mess.USN_Hokie wrote:1.
