Good article. In summary, 50 years ago there were about 2M direct federal employees (excluding uniformed military and postal workers). Today there are still about 2M. What has changed is the support. Today there are about 3M local and state employees whose jobs are funded by the federal government implementing federal programs at the local and state level. Another 7M contract employees where the feds have outsourced work to the private sector and another 2M jobs in the for-profit sector (i.e. Planned Parenthood, etc.) that are funded by federal dollars. That's an additional 12M jobs, bringing the total to 14M direct and indirect. 50 years ago that number was 4M. That's a huge increase.
