He did one on US aircraft carriers. Have you seen it? You might be interested in that.USN_Hokie wrote:Gonna have to watch this tonight.

You know, I saw the title but was super busy in April and never got to see it. Just watched it. He brings up a lot of valid points.CWHOKIECPA wrote:He did one on US aircraft carriers. Have you seen it? You might be interested in that.USN_Hokie wrote:Gonna have to watch this tonight.
I can say this...
1. The Navy has invested an incredible amount of resources into high value asset defense and survivability.
2. There was a decision a long time ago to go with carriers versus the air force solution of long range strike. Until we have a viable third option, long range strike/bombers presents its own set of problems and is probably more defeat-able. Stealth technology can become obsolete overnight. There is a reason that China is investing in carriers right now. Russia has optimistic plans of its own.
3. There are efforts towards using lesser value assets. The LHA 6 and LHA 7 are almost identical to the WASP Class amphibs, except they have no well deck or ballasting capability. The trade-off gives them more hangar and fuel capacity for F-35Bs. These two ships will almost certainly be deployed to 7th Fleet (Japan) for just the reasons he suggested.
4. The majority of the changes between the Ford Class and Nimitz Class are increased survivability, design efficiency, and fact of life changes. Going back to Nimitz just gives you a less survivable carrier that still has 5000+ souls on board. I don't really think that's an option.
