"Salaries and benefits for prison guards and medical providers drove much of the increase." I'm okay with paying the employees well, given the hazards & difficulties of the job.USN_Hokie wrote:-$75k/yr

I don't think cost for justice should be as big an issue as many. If we have a guy awaiting appeals, I say God bless, and let it roll.
So I put (the dead dog) on her doorstep!

Nope. There is one employee for every 2 inmates. That's a much better ratio than you get at a child care center. Keeping prisoners safe and fed is more important than keeping our children safe and fed. 6 week old babies have a ratio of 4:1. 10 year olds in daycare have a 14:1 ratio. Prisoners - 2:1.VisorBoy wrote:"Salaries and benefits for prison guards and medical providers drove much of the increase." Just saying.

Is that gross number of inmates / gross number of prison guards? If so, you need to roughly multiply by 3 (assuming 8hr shifts) if we're making an apples to apples comparison..HokieFanDC wrote:Nope. I'm taking it from the LA Times article, and they term it as corrections department employees, so more than just guards.USN_Hokie wrote:Is that gross number of inmates / gross number of prison guards? If you were to really do a comparison, you'd have to do something like number of corrections dept. man-hours for each hour of prison time, to daycare man-hours for each hour of daycare provided.
I'm guessing it's still pretty hideous.

California is Brazil, with a higher tax base that makes things like drinking water safe and roads paved. If not for the silicon valley tax base, that state would look just like the socialist hell holes in South America. Latino gangs make up 40% of the prison population in Brazil, Nicaragua, and yes California, USA. Enjoy

Haha, they're a racket with the guards pulling in over 100k and up to 250k. CA is corrupt.VisorBoy wrote:"Salaries and benefits for prison guards and medical providers drove much of the increase." Agree with your overall point, just point out that it might not be exactly apples:apples.HokieFanDC wrote:I'm taking it from the LA Times article, and they term it as corrections department employees, so more than just guards.USN_Hokie wrote:Is that gross number of inmates / gross number of prison guards? do i care if a criminal is comfortable in prison...no. It is nuts that the costs are that high but then again we accept a guy can be arrested 50 times and somehow will become a great citizen when he gets out again
