In a nutshell, the prime minister is allowed to call a special election at any time. In this case May thought she could increase the number of seats controlled by the Tories, so she called a special election to strengthen her position. Since they have a multi-party system, if a single party controls a majority of the seats in Parliament, they can form their own governing body, if not they have to join with another party. She thought she could obtain this with her special election. Prior to this election, the Tories had to work with the UKIPs to get anything done, and May detested them because they are sort of like our version of the Freedom Caucus. They were in big favor of Brexit, while May was on the Stay side. So she want to rid herself of having to deal with these people. Well it back-fired big time and she now looks weaker since the Socialists gained seats. So now she has to work with the DUN party to form a government, but she may be forced out as the PM as a result of this dumb move.

May miscalculated, was trying to strengthen her party by calling early elections, did not work out well for them. Not surprising with the terrorist attacks the last few weeks
