They were Americans. Oddly enough, nobody objected to them being erected at the time. It's only postmodernist radicals who are suddenly offended by these "symbols" as you describe them. You should think about that.
Of course white people in power in the South didn't object to erecting Confederate statues and memorials back then.

But I'm not too concerned about what happened with erecting them then. I don't think we should have public statues and memorials of those who fought against our country and killed Americans.

I'm not going to re-fight the War Between The States with you, but clearly (clearly!) you have no idea what you're talking about. Being that you're a West Virginian, I'm not surprised by your ignorance of late 1800s US history. WVians didn't take a stand one way or the other, but simply cut and ran like the prussies they are.

No question that West Virginia was divided just like other border states. My point still stands, though. I don't think we should celebrate those who fought against this country.

I noticed you're refuting my points with emotional rambling. It means you're not prepared to intelligently debate and discuss the subject of displaying Confederate symbols. I'm happy to discuss the subject whenever you're up for it.

Psst...they're still in power. It's mostly white people who are pissed off at them.

It's almost as if......the statues didn't mean the same things to the people who erected them, and it's only millennials watching shitty documentaries who have the warped perceptions.

Yes, and it's almost as if the values of people back then have been evolving over time. I don't think anyone would intelligently argue that values, tolerances, etc. stay the same generation after generation.

You can't seriously be this dense.

Yeah, values are a lot different. The people who didn't want to destroy symbols and history like ISIS also opposed things like single parent families and people identifying as unicorns, for example.

Are we going to have another education session with you to explain that societies don't always get "better."?

Behaving like an emotional teenager isn't what I'd call schooling anyone. If Riverguy or you want to argue that governments within the United States should celebrate and honor those who fought against this country, make your argument as to why.

That's really the crux of the disagreement here as I believe that private organizations should be able to do as they wish on private land.

Do you think we should celebrate and honor those who fought against the United States?

Well retard, half the nation was on the other side of fight. It was a civil war and not a war against a foreign nation. So yes, the nation should preserve memorials to the nation's bloodiest war of brother vs. brother. I'm sure you're not done being an ignorance spewing douchebag.

Thank you. I just wanted an admission from one of The Usuals that governments within the US should honor those who fought against America.

Now, I fundamentally disagree with your position. Any Confederate symbols that individuals want to keep around (flags, monuments, museums, etc.) should be done with private funds on private land. I have no problem legally allowing that.

Danny Kanell was tweeting about how this wouldn't have gone on at Tally while the football team was on campus, basically asking why the football team didn't intervene. I mean, it was probably too early in the year for UVA Football to suffer their first loss, so wise decision on their part to stay out.
