General Lee was a genius

General Lee in response to a former Confederate general who in 1866 queried Lee about a proposed commemorative monument.

“My conviction is,” Lee wrote, “that however grateful it would be to the feelings of the South, the attempt in the present condition of the Country, would have the effect of retarding, instead of accelerating its accomplishment; & of continuing, if not adding to, the difficulties under which the Southern people labour.”

Declining an invitation from the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association:
“wiser … not to keep open the sores of war but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife, to commit to oblivion the feelings engendered.”

That's what you're saying, so of course you think it is a good point. To me it seemed a very prescient point.

If only Germany had a Hitler statue they wouldn't have forgotten about the Nazi's. These weak fallacies distract from a real discussion.

I wasn't making an argument for or against tearing down the statues. I was just noting that General Lee saw this coming.

The only one making a fallacious argument is you. The nazis are the ones analogous to the leftists. They were trying to create their own vision of history, just like your side is today.

Not many people know this, but when the Nazis were pushed out of Paris, Hitler ordered that all the monuments and historical buildings in the city be destroyed. I suppose you would side with Hitler that the Arc de Triomphe be leveled, after all its a monument to the Napoleonic wars. Thankfully, the German general whose name escapes me ignored the order.

That' the trap the left didn't see, Hitler was a progressive liberal with a eugenics program that won the admiration of the left. They've lied so much about the Nazis being right wingers that they forgot that the typical Nazi was more like IP and H2, demanding fair wages and sterilizing the "unfit". They're the same ilk and from the same school of thought. Science based authoritarians and central planners. There's little difference between an actual Nazi and modern liberal. Not the caricature of someone killing jews; one who was a socialist, believed their own intellect makes them the ruler over their fellow man, and that they should use reproduction to control the unfit. Same type of tyrant, same arrogant asshats.

It's pretty common for invaders to destroy monuments.

For some reason I can not side with Hitler and still understand General Lee's issue with Confederate statues. Can you?

Just to follow up, the idea that you need statues to not forget history is stupid. That doesn't mean I support the demolition of statues.

Of course you do, you've already debated that and still claim they're "just statues" and not memorials.

Hitler destroyed more German history and books which didn't align with his perceptions than anything else. Just like you guys.

As for the letters - I'm not a civil war expert but I think they're stretching things a bit if you actually read the letters. The first looks like an invitation to a business a friend from the war was opening up, presumably with some sort of memorial. Sounded like he didn't want to go all the way to Baltimore. As for the second - he didn't want to go to the battlefield where he was defeated. Can't really blame him. Not really seeing the there, there.

Regardless, monuments have more meaning than to just the leaders of the civil war. The left wants to destroy memorials to soldiers who died - you see those everywhere, including memorials to German soldiers who died during WW2. I don't have a problem with that, either. Then again, I'm not trying to re-write / destroy history like the communists and socialists.

Wait, so now you are OK with leveling the arc de triophe? Hard to keep up with all this spinning.

Where are your grandparents graves? You don't need headstones to remember them and I need some gravel fill for the driveway at the lake house. I see a mutually beneficial situation here.

No, Lee didn't see this coming. His comments were made only a few years after the war, during reconstruction when the wounds were still open and emotions were raw. Most of the statues were ultimately put up 25 to 45 years after the war -- giving plenty of time for reconciliation. The fact that this is even an issue 150 years after the war shows the inability of some groups to move on.

No, you said memorials aren't needed to remember history or people. Tell me why you use headstones (memorials) for passed loved ones. There is no difference.

This is great, you guys get premium $ for selling me your family headstones and I get to fill in the low spots in the driveway. I'll even crush them myself. You don't need headstones to remember aunt Betty - and let's face it, you probably think they were racist nazis anyways.
