Discovered a new form of cruel punishment
Being on a cruise ship and wanting to get the latest news and discovering the only news channel available was CNN. I may never cruise with Royal Caribbean again.

Juneau the only way to get to the Alaska Capital is by boat or air.
I only post using 100% recycled electrons.

You married? Not my idea and I somewhat agree. Anyway, it closed out 2 more states on my bucket list. Only 3 to go.USN_Hokie wrote:I wouldn't be caught dead on a "cruise ship" FWIW.ip_law-hokie wrote:Lots of necks. Yep. My opinion is somewhat tempered by the fact that I've been on a number of "cruises" in the past. I don't judge those who enjoy them and understand why some would.RWNJ wrote:You married? I think you can do it right, but you have to spend more $$ than I'd be willing to pay.USN_Hokie wrote:Yep. But RW did have the destination correct. I like the Caribbean, but if I'm near a cruise ship dock, or cruise shippers, I'm on the wrong part of the island (or the wrong island).

I've never been on a cruise for numerous reasons, but I've heard the on to AK is good. Also, the European river boat cruises look interesting and I've heard good thing about them. Just not sure I'd like to have my itinerary planned out so rigidly.

we did a 7 day one a few years ago to the Caribbean in May, it was lots of fun, had a great time. My wife's mom and dad wanted to go as they had never been on one so we took them. It was a Royal Carribbean cruise, boat was loads of fun, people were great, and we did some fun activities when we hit the ports

I was in Juneau for a week about a month and a half ago. 3rd time there for business, but took some time to see the sights. Beautiful place. Interesting people.Major Kong wrote:Family matters...Both my FiL and my Dad were sick and we needed to get back to help care for them.RWNJ wrote:We chose the boat. My wife had some friends do a Hawaiian cruise while we were there just visiting the island of Hawaii. When we got back my wife and her friend compared notes. Let's just say her friend was disappointed in what she didn't see vs. all the sights we saw.cwtcr hokie wrote:HokieHam wrote:I've never been on a cruise for numerous reasons, but I've heard the on to AK is good. Re: Discovered a new form of cruel punishment
No other Ski Club in the Country does what we do. Many ski clubs in larger cities only do 1 trip a year.
Besides Happy Hours all over the Valley and special programs each month:
For several years, in addition to 5 or 6 long distance snow skiing trips which are mostly out West, but also to Europe, Japan, Chile, and New Zealand, we've added a beach trip to either VA, NC, or SC, and cruises on Star Clippers Tall Ships in the Caribbean and along Costa Rica and Nicaragua. We have also done bike and barge trips through wine areas of France and last Spring toured the Amalfi Coast of Italy.
This year, we are going on two cruises, Croatia on a private yacht and a Mediterranean cruise to Italy, France, and Spain on Windstar. There might be one or two days of sailing only but the other days offer land excursions so we are not stuck on a huge mega-city (although I do recommend the Alaska cruise on the big ships (we were able to do a side trip every day but one) especially if you add a week of land excursion at the end).
On the upper Caribbean trip, we knew we would be seeing places referenced in the classic book, Treasure Island, so all of us read it before the trip.
A few years ago when we rafted through the Grand Canyon for 8 days, we all read Michener's Centennial and I left the book with the guides so in the evenings, after the geology lesson, they could read passages to their guests.
This is the largest Star Clipper, the Royal Clipper, (220 passengers, 100 crew) that I have sailed on twice, Russian built, Russian Captain who was amazed that 1/3 of the passengers were from the Roanoke Ski Club.

And this is the Star Pride which will be a new adventure this year:

Re: Discovered a new form of cruel punishment
We took her mom to hawaii also in the last few years, her dad refused to fly, so it was her mom and an aunt, 7 days, did not do any cruises but hit lots of activities on the main island and hopped over to kaui and had alot of fun zip lining and some river floating stuff. We have lots of animals so going anywhere together overnight is a production, hoping to have more time to do some traveling once we retire (I hope)HokieHam wrote:My wife had some friends do a Hawaiian cruise while we were there just visiting the island of Hawaii. Re: Discovered a new form of cruel punishment
I think a cruise would be neat to do some time, although the one a few years ago where the passengers were stranded with no food, water, or air conditioning is a little scary ...

I can afford a house, car, clothes, etc, but not a cruise? I can also afford a Chevy Cruze as well, but don't want one of those either.awesome guy wrote:Only because you can't afford itnolanvt wrote:And yet, I don't go on them. AG is wrong again.
