Why grow up if you don't have to? As someone who left home at 17, this entire concept is alien to me...I don't understand it all. I simply can't comprehend it. Then again, if you are one who has parents who dote on you and provide your every wish and demand, why would you want to give that up?

I think waiting to date, get your drivers license and trying alcohol are fine. Maybe even positive.

No, shows you want to be a child who is taken care of. Shows weakness, like a typical liberal.

Don't worry though, lots of smart young people from places like China and India will come here and start the next great companies, while the spoon fed liberal kids protest for transgender rights.

incorrect sir, kids need to grow up as if you don't life smacks you much harder. The company I work for the owners are husband and wife, their 19 year old daughter who is working at a vet clinic does not drive, they literally have to drive her everywhere.... its a huge pain in the ass. I cannot fathom not wanting to grow up, I was working at 15, driving at 16 and completely on my own after I graduated from VT, never asked my parents for anything (and they can easily afford it)

Taking adult responsibilities are very important and it is a part of life

Life of the liberal transgender protestor kid

1. Get further indoctrinated at NYU with a degree in women studies

2. Accumulate $200k in debt

3. After making $28K for three years, blame it on not having enough education

4. Go to grad schools to get masters and another $200K in debt

5. Get drivers license so you can drive Uber

6. Owe the taxpayers $500k when you account for the accumulated interest due to all the deferrals you took

7. Tell everyone you aren't getting married or buying a house because now at 30, you feel you have a unique set of values. The truth is, no one wants wants to inherit your debt, lack of life skills, or bad attitude.

8. At 40 you go on disability because you are a 100 pounds overweight substance abuser, still getting your therapist paid for by your parents.

9. Blame Trump, as he's a racist

I agree, having babies as a teenager is a bad life decision, you might want to let the inner city urban kids this factoid, then run for your life before they rob and kill you for your sneakers

I agree with the theme, but I'm not sure I would have used all these data points to make the case.

Another article on this topic. Interesting thesis regarding why young people are no longer getting jobs while in high school. Essentially, life is easy and they don't have to. They don't understand the concept of work, they don't understand what money is, where it comes from, etc.

The article makes some very good points and I am a big believer in getting a job while in HS, it does not even have to be much time but it teaches young people a ton. But parents these days don't want to stress muffy and god forbid he or she should have to put the phone down for more than 2 minutes.

I scratch my head in how people think this country is sustainable, we are coming up with multiple ways to get rid of humans in jobs while trying to make everything free,(education, health care, retirement). In my mind it is not sustainable but I wish luck to the kids of today, my wife and I never had any but I hope it works out for my nieces and nephews

If the problem is with the parents of high school kids, what's wrong with all the Gen Xers raising kids the wrong way?

I agree. If my kids can't find a job I'll contact a landscaping company and let them know I'll pay their hourly rate. Is that illegal?

huh? Yes I think pajama boy at 26 is still living in his cute bedroom is an idiot also. Sorry I have a big belief in personal responsibility, it is very sad to see so many that have no concept of personal responsibility. (But it is not sustainable, and you know that)

landscaping is not going to work anyways, illegal mexicans get all those jobs, beside you have to be available during the day to do landscaping. But I see tons of signs for help in rest., retail, etc.
I would not offer to pay the hourly rate though as then you need to set up a company, file weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports and get some workmens comp and liability insurance. And set up your state unemployment and all the forms required to be submitted for new hires. Now if you want to give the place money as a contribution or capital infusion or straight revenue the business owner would prob gladly accept that

I think that article is based on the same survey in the OP, but that is a very good point. Now that I think of it, I don't really see high schoolers working outside of the grocery store and chik fil a. The work Stat is pretty amazing.
