The article makes some very good points and I am a big believer in getting a job while in HS, it does not even have to be much time but it teaches young people a ton. But parents these days don't want to stress muffy and god forbid he or she should have to put the phone down for more than 2 minutes.

I scratch my head in how people think this country is sustainable, we are coming up with multiple ways to get rid of humans in jobs while trying to make everything free,(education, health care, retirement). In my mind it is not sustainable but I wish luck to the kids of today, my wife and I never had any but I hope it works out for my nieces and nephews
If the problem is with the parents of high school kids, what's wrong with all the Gen Xers raising kids the wrong way?

huh? Yes I think pajama boy at 26 is still living in his cute bedroom is an idiot also. Sorry I have a big belief in personal responsibility, it is very sad to see so many that have no concept of personal responsibility. (But it is not sustainable, and you know that)
I simply asked why Gen X is being irresponsible in raising the current generation of high schoolers if your assertion is correct about parents these days.

I agree. If my kids can't find a job I'll contact a landscaping company and let them know I'll pay their hourly rate. Is that illegal?
landscaping is not going to work anyways, illegal mexicans get all those jobs, beside you have to be available during the day to do landscaping. But I see tons of signs for help in rest., retail, etc.
I would not offer to pay the hourly rate though as then you need to set up a company, file weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports and get some workmens comp and liability insurance. And set up your state unemployment and all the forms required to be submitted for new hires. Now if you want to give the place money as a contribution or capital infusion or straight revenue the business owner would prob gladly accept that
I would pay the owner and the owner would pay my kid. It would be a great experience.

"Best" job I ever had. Nothing will teach you the value of education like laying soaking wet sod on an upper 90 degree day with ridiculous humidity in Va Beach/Chesapeake. I was paid under the table and slightly above minimum wage. Several of the guys I worked with were over 40. I don't know how they did it everyday.

Who do you blame when the kid is a brat?
Pampered and spoiled like a Siamese cat.
Blaming the kids is a lie and a shame.
You know exactly whose to blame,
the mother and the father.

I did golf course landscaping for 2yrs in high school. It was a great job - done by 1, 3pm at the latest. I made $7.25hr which was better than all my peers. Got to hit on the beer golf cart chicks. Very weird Guatemalans, though - Hector liked to eat goat excrement.

Agree. Children are mirrors of their parents more or less. If they were raised by someone else who gave them bad habits, that's the fault of the parents as well.

The child is the father of the man.

I had the best job in high school. I worked in Falls Church at the AAA. I did 12 hours a week of telesales. The pay was all commission and I made about $125 to $150/wk once I got good at it. This was 82 to 84, when minimum wage was $3.35. I spent two years in the job and was able to buy a used Fiat Spider and spend a month in Europe once high school ended. The whole experience was incredible now that I think about it.

Seems like they might be conflating teen pregnancies with teen births. Is there any reliable data on teen pregnancies?
Not the same thing. I'd assume use of the pill and abortion are higher than 20yrs ago.

*For white people. Hispanics have dropped a bit and blacks haven't really moved at all looking at CDC figures. Looking at the published figures, you're correct though - they have dropped.

Pregnancy data is all based on surveys as far as I can tell, but like I said, haven't looked that closely.

Point is, if women are having fewer abortions because they're using more birth control, I wouldn't exactly call that virtuous.

Yeh, I don't feel like kids are more virtuous today than when I was in college. But, part of that may be that when I go back to BBurg, the girls today are all wearing short shorts, belly shirts, backless shirts, much more revealing than the LL Bean sweaters and turtlenecks all the girls were wearing in the early '90s.
