I had never heard of either Atlanta mayoral candidate ...

The Atlanta mayoral election is nominally non-partisan.
One candidate - Keisha Lance Bottoms - is African American and a far-left democrat endorsed by the current far-left mayor and most establishment democrats. The other candidate - Mary Norwood - is white and largely non-partisan in her prior work and mostly avoids taking D vs R political positions. She is endorsed by the few Republicans in Atlanta plus a decent number of Democrats.
The only reason to vote against Norwood the left can give is that electing a white person would be going backwards. (Judge the candidates not by the content of their character, but by their race.)
It's really despicable - the democrats don't even pretend there is a policy issue - they only disagree over race.
