Had a really good discussion with my 28 year old son on this topic while sitting around the fire pit drinking beer when he was in town over Thanksgiving. He was referencing a white paper on the topic that he had read.
Essentially the papers take is that all of the premiums paid for health insurance policies plus all of the individual co-pays and deductibles paid would cover all of the additional funding needed, above current tax dollars, to pay for universal single payer coverage of a similar level to today's coverages. Thus the individual wouldn't see any cost above what they see today -- it would be cost neutral.
I need to try and find that paper.
Our per capita costs already greatly exceed any other country’s. It’s not close and it’s only going to get worse.
You guys seem think that I welcome single payer wholeheartedly. I don’t. There will be rations.
But it’s the only realistic way forward. Every other industrialized nation has come to this conclusion except us, and look where we stand.

That’s quality of life index. Here is per capita GDP.

Oddly (or not, actually) enough, it's probably a reasonable approximation of IQ rank as well. Don't really see how it's relevant to this conversation, though.

Numbers Hokie says we are the premier industrialized nation in the world. I was wondering what metric he was using.

Wow what a racist chart. Almost all the countries on that chart have western style democracies. And most of them are mostly white, or are run by governments that are mostly white. Where are all the African, South American, and Central American countries? Why is socialist Venezuela not on there? Why is communist China and NK not on there? Yes I realize Hong Kong is in China, but China has allowed Hong Kong to keep most of its capitalist roots.

They also have single payer healthcare for their citizens. But we will get there one day. Progress.

So does China, Cuba, and many SA countries but they are not on there. So that's not the common denominator. But nice try.

We are, unless your definition includes making overpriced, obsolete watches, cookoo clocks, and collecting interest on dead Nazi bank accounts.
Before DC chimes in - yes, that's a gross oversimplification - but even you would agree that every country in the world can't have an economy like Switzerland, right? If we agree on that, then you'd agree that list isn't exactly using the right criteria to make your argument (indeed, that's not even really what it's meant to do).

You're too stupid to know what single payer is. Manchester trash.

How about per capita GDP? Bullshit too?
I do realize that American exceptionalism does take some squinting, as our rugged individualists now enjoy playing video games as grown men (presumably playing the games in a ruggedly individualistic fashion with their cowboy boots, chaps and picture of Ronnie).

You mad this a.m., bro?
GDP is measurable, to a point, and isn’t based entirely on opinion.
Quality of life, as measured by things like, oh..I dunno...watching “Girls” reruns on HBO for some misguided squinting fools may seem superior to playing video games...to others not so much so...and still others, like myself who do neither ...

We're number 1 when we use John Edwards 2 Americas and factor out the democrats, at least that demographics that votes DNC 95% of the time. Diversity weighs us down.

So quality of life (measured how?) is how you define premier industrialized nation? I also couldn't help but notice that 5 of the top 8 are small, homogeneous , lilly white countries. Hmm?

There's countries on that list with higher rates than us.
Apparently wanting to kill yourself isn't an indication of bad quality of life.
