Question, though. Does this apply to all the western european immigrants who fled their countries to come to America? IMO, someone leaving their country to go to another country that has more opportunities, doesn't mean they don't love their country or its' culture.

Also, I think you have to look at the specific region they come from. The Philippinos I know are all mostly culturally American, but still maintain some cultural elements of the Philippines.

People from Mexico and the Middle East, much different, for different reasons.
My family left Hungary after the October Revolution was put down in 1956. My Nagymama still cooked Hungarian dishes and they had Hungarian decor scattered about the house, but for all intents and purposes, they became Americans once they got here. Every one of them learned to speak English, became citizens, and participated in the American way of life. They asked for no concessions. My father was 14 years old and began school here in the first grade. Within a couple of years, he'd caught up and went to high school like an ordinary American, graduating in 1962, at the age of 19. He put himself through college and lived the American dream.

In answer to your question, when one immigrates to a new country, it's okay to hold onto their culture within the parameters of living their life, but they most certainly should assimilate into their new country's culture in every possible way. When the two cultures conflict, then assimilation should take precendence. In other words, speak your language at home when you like, but you have to be able to communicate with your your neighbors. Dress how you like, as long as your style is acceptible within your new country. A hijab is one thing, but a full burka is against the law in many cities, for good reasons -- NOBODY is allowed to wear a mask covering their face in many of these places. Practice your religion, but do not force your beliefs and morality on those with whom you do not agree. Sharia simply does not fly in a free society because it makes women second-class citizens.

Basically, immigrants and natural citizens should live and let live -- ESPECIALLY is a country which claims to be "free".

1. Partial credit to Adam Carolla. He jokes about soccer in the US as (paraphrasing) "..a time when people wave flags and cheer on the country they risked their lives fleeing from."

2. To answer your question - absolutely, that's my point. My grandpa "Bill" was born "Wilhem" in Germany, circa 1921. He grew up and shot down Messerschmidts from a B-17 over his former homeland instead of getting a liberal arts degree and gushing over german culture in his dorm room in between hot pockets. Before the welfare state, America got immigrants who wanted to be a part of American culture. After the welfare state, we get (mostly) immigrants looking for benefits who are encouraged to idolize the very culture which made their homelands a shithole.

Note: not shitting on Filipinos, there's lots of good people - but the ones I met were interested in being Americans, not Filipinos; and were willing to fight for the US to justify it.

So when you go to their home country you should segregate yourself from the population of the country? how does that make sense? Or should the country you go to change stuff to meet your needs?
They would never put up with this kind of crap in Asian countries.

Allowing a foreign population to come to your country and start making demands is strictly for those of white Western European descent. They'd laugh at you anywhere else.
I don't know that they are making demands so much as our CalBerkley president is ladeling himself in self loathing guilt, like turkey gravy... this is LWNJobbery
It’s just being inclusive. Good stuff.

No, it is really, really, really, stupid stuff. And, not free. Where is the Huguenot room? Your definition of inclusive is exclusive to someone else

Pretty ironic comment considering the entire point of University is exclusivity / sorting. Maybe you should have just written "inclusive" on every page of the LSAT.

If the culture is what led to conditions forcing their emigration, yeah...that’s stupid excrement. That doesn’t mean one couldn’t or shouldn’t long for the food or mountain range vistas he was used to; but cultural mis-belief sets!? Yeah...longing for that is moronic.

Philippines are culturally american, because they adopted what they thought was superior to their own..,the opposite of what point you’re trying to make.

Middle East? That’s introducing a demonic cultural belief set, yeah. I’m talking mohammet crap. No accounting for the devil when logic is called for.
