It's now official. New NFL TV deal greater than the last!

Post by TheH2 »

It's official, Fox just agreed to pay $660 million a year for five years to broadcast Thursday night football. The previous contract signed two years ago was for $450 million a year. Is this what failure looks like?

Economics/logic/critical thinking is a bitch isn't it.

Yes, this is the second post today - but it's now official so warranted.

yes, they spent unwisely to get the games from nbc and the other network that was doing them......bad decisions are probably not the thing to praise

If some rich dude spends 2,000,000 for an old chevy vega with no engine does that mean that old chevy vega's are doing great and worth that..... or a guy that can spend it and does not care how bad of a decision it is?

Yep. Thursday night games with expanded digital. We'll see what happens with the Sunday and Monday night contracts. They also made Fox lock in for 5 years instead of 2, that's a sucker's deal. Fox must be expecting a big Trump bump in advertising during an expanding economy to take this or to eat Thursday night college football viewers.

Digital content was only $50M last year. Back that out and you've got $610. They paid more, and they certainly paid more per eyeball and revenue continues to increase.

Yes, the monopoly. They are the only ones that sell the NFL which brings the most eyeballs to the TV. No one else can sell the #1 program on TV. Lots of bidders, one seller. The NFL is a monopoly.

haha, that's not a monopoly. They're not the only ones selling sports and not the only ones selling football. Being the #1 program doesn't make them a monopoly either. Let me help you out.

They're in the entertainment and sports business where there are several competitors like the NBA, MLB, NCAA, and college conferences like the BigTin and SEC. You'd be hard pressed to win an anti-trust judgement against them as a monopoly.

LOL. The NFL negotiated the rights to broadcast the only (arena league...) professional football league in the U.S. They have no competitors. CBS can not buy the rights to broadcast professional football from anyone else. Good luck to the XFL!

Only Apple can sell Apple phones, they're a monopoly! You're using a ridiculous and wrong definition of monopoly. They're not the only football league, they're not the only sports league, they're not the only entertainment, and they're not a monopoly. They're not even the only professional football league as ESPN broadcasts the CFL. Being big doesn't make them a monopoly.

TV ratings are down 17% the past two years, Ad revenue is down 7%, this years super bowl will be the lowest rated in 20 years - but according to you none of that is true, so we can all sleep better. Thanks.

LMFAO. ESPN also broadcasts h.s. bball games, but that doesn't make them a competitor to the NBA. In your words, the NFL just extracted more than 100% of the consumer surplus. That's a monopoly.

If laughing about being wrong makes you feel better then go ahead. A HS game playing on TV during a pro game does make them a competitor in sports entertainment. That's the definition of the business. And then there's the CFL and soon to be XFL. And then all the other sports leagues. They're not a monopoly by any definition, they're just dominant.

Well, some of the numbers aren't true but the general theme is correct. I never said anything different. All I said was the NFL brings numbers. The TV deals *could* continue to go up because it is the best way to get the most viewers. The only definitive statement was that they would start paying more per pair of eyeballs. That's exactly what is happening (a hell of a lot more) .

The difference between you and me is that I take all of the same information and come to a different conclusion. That conclusion was just proved right.

You're operating on incomplete information. Those contracts are very complicated with many non-cash concession the NFL could and likely gave up to drive up the price tag. It makes 0 sense for Fox to pay more for less, they're treading close to making it not profitable for Fox on the surface. Or at least not profitable enough to take a risk with such a price tag. May even be a giant rebate in the middle so they can go to ESPN with this contract and not disclose a 200 million rebate in the middle. Lawyers do that with internet tools I used to sell. Wanted $50, but they said that was too cheap and they want to bill more. So they came up with the rebate scheme, charge them $500 which they bill the client, with a $450 rebate which they pocketed and didn't tell the client. So it's still $50, but them being able to tell their clients it was $500 and chargeback for that. The real world is more complicated than you're factoring.

Since you haven't watched a football game since Janet Jackson showed a boobie, I can understand that you wouldn't know that there is already a Thursday night game that was carried by CBS and NFL network I believe.
I don't need to watch a game when I can read the article which details the differences.
