Abingdon, VA - Popular hiking / climbing area now off-limits to firearms. Per newly erected signage, property along the cliffs of the Hidden Valley Wildlife Management Area, owned by the Carolina Climbers Coalition, is now a gun-free zone. The Carolina Climbers Coalition owns / leases numerous climbing properties, these properties contain very strict guidelines to climbing ethic and etiquette which even includes the prohibition of sport rappelling / rappelling, fires, hunting, camping, pets, etc. In Virginia, carrying firearms on posted "private" property is not a crime in itself as it is in other states... the landowners / leaseholders however, have legal authority to ask you to leave or pursue trespassing charges.

Update: The president of the organization advised initially that this report was untrue and an internet rumor. After being shown pictures of the sign he advised the gun prohibition was only for legal reasons so visitors with guns could be asked to leave the property if there was a problem. Other CCC properties contain varying verbiage in regards to firearms among other guidelines.
