University of Wisconsin Eliminating Worthless Majors

Post by UpstateSCHokie »

...such as Afro Studies, Homoerotic Studies, and Gender Fluid Studies.

Oops, just kidding. They are going to do away with "worthless studies" such as English & History. Because of course who needs those things in a civilized society? Gotta make more room for important majors such as Militant Lesbian Studies and Critical Black Theory Studies.

The actual list is:
-American studies,
-art (excluding graphic design)
-English (excluding English for teacher certification)
-French
-geography
-geoscience
-German
-history (excluding social science for teacher certification),
-music literature
-philosophy
-political science
-sociology
-Spanish

Conspicuously absent are African studies, Women's Studies, Hispanic Studies, Muslim Studies, and Gay Studies.

University of Wisconsin campus proposes elimination of majors such as English, history
By Rebecca Savransky - 03/21/18 07:55 AM EDT

The University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point is reportedly discussing a plan to eliminate 13 majors including English, philosophy, history and Spanish.

The campus — one of 11 campuses in the University of Wisconsin system — would instead focus on programs that have "clear career pathways," The Washington Post reported.

Under the proposal, the school would expand areas such as marketing, management, graphic design and computer information systems — areas that "have demonstrated value and demand in the region," according to the school.

The school's administration is framing the idea as a way to increase its declining enrollment and to deal with a multimillion-dollar deficit, according to the Post.

Faculty and students, however, plan a sit-in this week at the campus administration building to oppose the change.

The plan needs to be approved by a campus governance committee and the University of Wisconsin system's chancellor and Board of Regents for it to take effect, according to the Post.

“To fund this future investment, resources would be shifted from programs with lower enrollment, primarily in the traditional humanities and social sciences,” the school said in a statement.

“Although some majors are proposed to be eliminated, courses would continue to be taught in these fields, and minors or certificates will be offered.”

Ummm...right there prominently displayed on their website is the department of Gender & Women's studies. Why is that not on your list??
Gender & Women’s Studies Major

The Gender and Women’s Studies major provides a unique background for students seeking to analyze gender and other vectors of inequality, both historically and in contemporary society, as reflected through texts, social practices, and social institutions in the United States and abroad. Graduates have gone on to provide this kind of analysis in fields like health policy, immigration law, social work, reproductive justice, educational administration, employment policy, medicine, architectural design, and media production.

There's one for LGBTQ+ Studies:
LGBTQ+ Studies Certificate

The LGBTQ+ Studies Certificate Program, housed administratively in the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies, is a campus-wide program open to students in any major. Courses that count toward this interdisciplinary certificate come from a wide range of fields including literature, history, sociology, medical history, as well as from gender and women’s studies, which is in itself an interdisciplinary field.
https://gws.wisc.edu/undergraduate/cert ... q-studies/

There's one for Afro-American Studies:
Undergraduate Degree

The Department of Afro-American Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison offers students an opportunity to study black history, culture, and society in ideal interdisciplinary models. It challenges students to critically examine facts and issues that are historically and contemporaneously relevant to the African American experience.
Approved by the Board of Regents in 1970, the Department of Afro-American Studies is an outgrowth of student and grassroots protests for relevance in higher education that occurred during the 1960s in Madison and on college campuses throughout the country. Today, the department offers a wide variety of courses leading to an undergraduate degree and certificate, and at the graduate level, a Master of Arts degree. It is one of this country’s most successful departments of Afro-American Studies.

MAJOR

The major in Afro- American Studies requires a minimum of 30 credits (no more than six credits of independent study will count toward the 30 credits). Students majoring in Afro American Studies are required to select one area of concentration.
Majors specialize in one of three areas of concentration, but must take at least one course from each area. A maximum of 40 credits will be counted toward fulfillment of degree requirements. Special Topics courses may be repeated as topics vary. At least 15 credits in courses numbered 300 and above must be taken in residence at UW Madison. In selecting introductory courses, students should consult with the Undergraduate Advisor for help with selecting courses that best complement their overall programs of study.
