Two Hundred Years of Migration

Post by 133743Hokie »

Great, short video graphic showing the history of migration to the US, showing where majority came from at certain points in time. Early on, primarily Europeans. Chinese in the 1860s building the railroads. Russians in the late 1800s, early 1900s. Italians in the 1920s. Germans in the 30s and 40s. SE Asians in the 60s and 70s. Mexicans starting in the 50s, with central and south America soon after. The counter in the bottom left shows the top three countries in every decade. Mexico becomes number one around 1950. Very neat.

Interestingly, immigration as a % of US population is much smaller nowadays than back in the 1800s when Europeans dominated immigration.

And of course we had a huge land mass we were trying to entice people to come and settle. Quite different from the past 50 years

Emigration was a lot larger too!

Lies, damned lies, and statistics. Immigration is a great thing without a welfare state.

I'm surprised that India doesn't make the top 3. That is the only group other than Mexican that you find in large numbers no matter where you go in the US.

I wonder if that list doesn't include people here "temporarily" as almost every Indian I work with is here on a work visa, including some that have been here temporarily for 30 years.
Looks like the only thing 1984 got wrong was the date.

If you look at the video, india is big, but only starting around 1960 or so, so it hasn't had enough time to build big numbers overall.
