You really need a link for this? You want to act all snotty while not having a clue about how CA and other border states accommodate Latinos with "English as a second language".nolanvt wrote:Link?awesome guy wrote: The Latinos are encouraged to keep their crappy culture and not learn English.
What fighting is going on here and who is accepting the shift of the war transferring from that part of the Mid-East to America?Corruption has nothing to do with Israel and Palestine arguing, Armenians and Turks, etc. They have genuine hate as each has attempted genocide on the other. They need to leave that crap at the door when they come here, that's the whole point of the immigration, to abandon the death in their home nation for a chance in life in this one. Part of that process is letting go of the old wars, no matter how painful. And you're inviting the same here by accepting moving the fight from there to here via multiculturalism.
LA has large Armenian and Turk populations, especially in Glendale. They're still at each others throats. Good luck getting the two in the same room without a fight breaking out.

What has typically distinguished America since its founding has been is system of government and self reliance (I won't say exceptionalism). It was founded by immigrants and has grown and prospered in part thru immigrants. Whether you wholly agree with it or not, America is generally perceived as the shining beacon that attracts others. More than any other country it is a successful melting pot. Immigrants assimilate, absorb the culture, become part of the culture. They give to the US as opposed to the US ceding to them.nolanvt wrote:How so?133743Hokie wrote: Bingo. It's what makes Americans Americans. Yes, I have been to various ethnic neighborhoods. Very small pockets. Very small segment of the population. But it's interesting how they don't foist their culture on the surrounding neighborhoods and don't demand it of the USG.Uprising wrote:Always? Have you been to a Chinatown? Little Italy? If by assimilate (since the subject and context of the thread is about 'necks getting upset w/ foreign languages being used in the Coke ad), you mean learn to speak English, I agree. As I stated previously, first generation immigrants need to learn to speak English if they want to be able to function and succeed in America. I'm not as concerned about their offspring because they'll catch on to English much faster being exposed to it at an earlier age.133743Hokie wrote:What has typically distinguished America since its founding has been is system of government and self reliance (I won't say exceptionalism). Re: Rednecks object to multilingual America the Beautiful
I'm shocked this is even debated. Assimilation has proven itself the hands down winner. What I find most interesting/idiotic is the polygots respect every culture....but their own. There may be self loathing at play here where they're looking for their utopia in those fleeing socialism and authoritarian regimes. As if to say "no, bring us your socialism, we want that!". Idiots.133743Hokie wrote:What has typically distinguished America since its founding has been is system of government and self reliance (I won't say exceptionalism). You're completely ignorant on this. The Latinos, enabled by idiots like the author you've espoused, refuse to learn English. Instead they demand everyone else speak Spanish. They don't speak English in their homes and their children aren't taught more than the basics. They aren't getting a dose of English as you're claiming, they live in sub-Americas where everything is Spanish and can only muster together some Spanglish when venturing outside the cocoon. And it's partially like this because they just hoop the fence instead of going through an immigration process where English and it's importance is taught to them.nolanvt wrote:If by assimilate (since the subject and context of the thread is about 'necks getting upset w/ foreign languages being used in the Coke ad), you mean learn to speak English, I agree. Link? My guess is that a small minority of the American Latino population actually believe this. The ones that do are wrong. You can guess, but you would be wrong. Live in the world a bit instead of pretending you know something that you clearly don't. I'm chuckling at a 20 something from WV that's never lived far there lecturing us on the language of Latinos. Think you might be a little foolish? On your knowledge quest, check out La Raza for an idea of what many believe. And before you go on making up arguments about La Raza being some fringe movement, membership has been something of a litmus test for Latino voters in CA and AZ. The former LA mayor was a member. That's the mindset most have.nolanvt wrote:Link? My guess is that a small minority of the American Latino population actually believe this. The ones that do are wrong. If there's data suggesting that a significant portion of the American Latino population believes they shouldn't learn English and that English-speaking natives should cater to them, I would be interested in seeing it. Re: Rednecks object to multilingual America the Beautiful
I spent eight years in Vegas where there are large numbers of first generation immigrants from both Asian and Latino decent. I saw very little difference in how they "assimilated." All the kids spoke English and most the parents spoke very little. The differences are apparent only because there is such a larger number of Spanish speaking immigrants that the market takes notice on a national scale. But you can also see it in any major city that has a critical mass of a certain ethnicity.awesome guy wrote:Uprising wrote:Always? Have you been to a Chinatown? Little Italy? Re: Rednecks object to multilingual America the Beautiful
How many kids did you encounter? I doubt many. Los Angeles, San Diego, and Phoenix have huge issues from Latinos refusing to assimilate. And they're in such large numbers they can live in their communities without having to speak English. The problem arises for the second and third generations trying to break out make something of themselves when they're not really learning English in a meaningful way. Even the second and third generations have thick and almost unintelligible accents. The school systems have enormous issues because their English is so poor they can't teach in it and that just makes it much harder for them to be more than a house cleaner. Plus many just don't want educations because they consider it girly. They value manual labor more than anything else. Add in the other factor of rampant crime and gangs and then these kids are at extreme disadvantage. Their path to success starts with a good education and there are many obstacles stemming from their parent's refusal to assimilate.Uprising wrote:I spent eight years in Vegas where their are large numbers of first generation immigrants from both Asian and Latino decent. FTR I watched the back story and it was great. All of these children that sang spoke perfect English in the their native language with an explanation on why America is great.
What I actually was surprised about is the many #'s of brilliant 'mericans that tweeted criticizing Coke for having children sing the "National Anthem" in a foreign language.

Strange that they're upset about foreigners singing America the Beautiful, when it was written by a foreigner about America being beautiful.

WOW, nailed it as usual. You sure people aren't upset because it was sung on Sunday instead of Saturday? That's another difference too, no?
