Nolan, why did you like the multilingual coke ad?
Assuming you did, since you took a shot at those of us who didn't like it.
Did it tug your heart strings, did it make you yearn for a world of peace and love?
I didn't like it artistically or as an ad vehicle.
What was the point...?

Re: Nolan, why did you like the multilingual coke ad?
I was getting a beer when the commercial aired. I originally saw it being talked about on Twitter w/ the "OMG speak English" xenophobic tweets. Once I watched the actual ad, my own personal opinion of it was indifferent.oaktonhokie wrote:Assuming you did, since you took a shot at those of us who didn't like it.

Good ad for coke products?
Entertaining ad?
You seem reluctant to answer.

It was a good ad for the Coke products in terms of generating discussion, which is the goal of the commercials. I thought the 'entertaining' aspect of the ad was meh.oaktonhokie wrote:So your opinion is what....? Not try to pick a fight, just curious.

Re: Nolan, why did you like the multilingual coke ad?
I actually liked it. I don't get why so many people got upset over it. It wasn't the National Anthem being sung in Chinese. It was America the Beautiful. There is nothing "sacred" about that song. And Coca-Cola is an international company, so what's the big deal if they have an international commercial talking about how beautiful 'Murica is?
I don't care if you're a Democrat or a Republican... if you refuse to consider alternatives to the two parties, you support the Status Quo and you are a major part of the problem.

Actually, the purpose of commercials is to move merchandise. Not to generate discussion.
Madison avenue has many many ads that were loved (or hated) and generated lots of discussion. But did not generate revenue.
I take your point that discussing a commercial is usually a good thing, but discussions don't feed the bull dog.

As stated earlier, it's AMERICA the beautiful, not EARTH the beautiful.
Again repeating myself....myself....myself.....myself, why not have the foreign languages with images of America the beautiful on the screen, instead of images of other countries.
Logically, it makes no sense.
America the beautiful.... and here's a photo of what, paris?
Derivative, incongruous and ineffective, imo.

I'm most upset over Nolan and the deadspin idiot saying anyone not agreeing with their multicultural nonsense is an idiot or xenophobic. Multiculturalism is a proven loser. And it's hilarious being called xenophobic by WV white boy. My family has 1st generation immigrants from 4 different nations, all Latinos(except me ). And I've actually lived in border states instead of preaching how they are by thought experiments. To me it shows how foolish and ignorant the multiculturalist are, they have an idea in their head not based on experience in or knowledge of the world they profess to know.Hokie CPA wrote:I actually liked it. Re: Nolan, why did you like the multilingual coke ad?
These are the same people who would cheer the Soviet National Anthem in English. I think part of their glee is in sticking 'Merica in the eye, to knock us down a peg. Because they want us to believe we're no better or different than any other nation in the world. Just another nation like the rest of the world so we should turn to socialism as so many decrepit nations have. Ironically, the same socialism immigrants are fleeing.oaktonhokie wrote:As stated earlier, it's AMERICA the beautiful, not EARTH the beautiful.

Usually, but not always. And generating discussion is NOT the reason companies spend millions of dollars to advertise.
Would a company rather (if they could only do one) generate discussion or move merchandise?
Not saying that generating a buzzzzz is not usually a good thing. Only that it's not the REASON companies advertise.

Re: Nolan, why did you like the multilingual coke ad?
I think you both have a point. Publicity in general creates awareness and generates discussion. This in turn creates broader exposure for the product, which the manufacturers hope the advertising will do. But then the product has to appeal to the masses and perform to expectations or it still will not succeed.nolanvt wrote:Generating discussion aides in moving merchandise.oaktonhokie wrote:Actually, the purpose of commercials is to move merchandise. No wrestling, just context. If you are going to use your multinational family as a basis for not being xenophobic, it is relevant to note that you've tried to have some of them deported. Ok, but when you tout deadspin that get's lost. Specially when the article you linked and defended promotes multiculturalism and calls those who disagree idiots. In addition, the idea of Latinos mostly assimilating is not founded in reality. They've been incredibly resistant to it, thanks in no small part to the ramblings and policies of people like the deadspin author. I guess the urge to be contrarian overruled thoughtfulness.nolanvt wrote:Your post is amusing because we're both actually on the same page in terms of the importance of assimilation.awesome guy wrote:I'm most upset over Nolan and the deadspin idiot saying anyone not agreeing with their multicultural nonsense is an idiot or xenophobic. 1) I'm mocking those who made the "OMG the song should be in English" tweets.
2) If that's not the reality, I would like to see some data suggesting American Latinos refuse to speak English and believe English-speaking natives should cater to them in Spanish only.
