? Maybe I should put this on our version of the lounge, but I'm not sure you'd see it ...?
I'm putting together a 5 day paddle/camp trip w/ a buddy of mine who's never paddled in VA. I'm looking at factors like remoteness and scenery.
I've never canoed the Holston (north, middle, nor South forks.). Is the scenery pretty good? Campsites (not campgrounds, just flat areas we could throw a tent/start a fire) available?
Key question- would you drink that water if you'd run it through backpacker's filter ?
Holston caught my eye when I was just staring at a map.
Others I'm considering are either of the 2 Shenandoahs (north/south forks) or the New.
TIA, sir.

...to be honest I'd pick the Clinch River. It's the popular choice of most of my friends.
Of the 3 forks of the Holston River the South Fork is by far the best choice but has some pretty good rapids especially above Damascus.
Water quality is good for either river.

FTR the North Fork of the Holston River is absolutely AWESOME! That being written from Saltville all the way down to Kingsport is polluted because of the former Olin Matheson works at Saltville (one of the original Superfund site's and still active - Mercury)...so I would in no way drink the water.
