Please forgive any appearance of naivete, but where exactly did the chemical weapons originate that are currently being deployed in Syria?
The Syrian regime under Hafez al-Assad and later his feckless son, Bashar, maintained a strong security police but a medium grade national defense...by middle east standards.
In Iraq, just to the east, Saddam Hussein had an ego maniacal desire to be the kingpin of the arab world.
Hafez and Saddam were allies, buddies, and Ba'ath Party frat brothers.
Western Intelligence, beginning during the Clinton Administration was convinced that Iraq was producing, stockpiling and had deployed (northern Iraq vs Kurds) lethal chemical weapons. The Bush Administration was ridiculed and criticized for its continuation of this policy and pursuit of evidence alleged first by the previous administration.
Some speculated that immediately prior, concurrent or subsequent to "Shock and Awe", Hussein was able to sneak WMD across the Syrian border.
Just sayin', has it been established that Syria manufactured neurotoxins? Purchased material and equipment from France? Germany? Received a generous gift from friendly Russia?
Any thoughts?

Are you referring specifically to their use of Sarin or have they been using other chem weapons too?

Hi, Once.
No specific types of chemical agents, just generic chemical weapons.
This latest attack (the largest and most obscene) is but one of several during the past couple of years, yes?
Best regards to you and yours.

They came from Iraq. It's the worst kept secret.miles wrote:Please forgive any appearance of naivete, but where exactly did the chemical weapons originate that are currently being deployed in Syria?

That seems obvious. I never understood why liberals would run around suggesting that Saddam never had WMD, or that there was no way he still had them. He had them, used them, and there was no reason to think he didn't still have them prior to the invasion.

Re: Weapons of Mass Destruction
It's my understanding that Syria has been purchasing chemicals that serve as baseline (for lack of a better word) ingredients for many years (20 to 30) from a variety of European companies headquartered in various countries (and some government officials, particularly Russia and maybe others). I also understand that the establishment of some Syrian State science research institute has made it easier for Syria to make these purchases (under the guise of research needs) and subsequently manufacture the weapons, in particular, Sarin. Whether or not they have the capability to manufacture large quantities is subject to debate. No one knows how much counter space they have in their kitchen. So, it naturally follows that officials would start questioning other sources (Iraq/NK, etc.). Just my opinion, but I'd bet it's more a matter of Syria having a much bigger kitchen than the world originally thought coupled with self serving or desperate governments and industries providing the ingredients. If indeed the chem weapons came already manufactured by Iraq (entirely possible) or other countries, Syria started out slow several years ago barely dipping their toes in before going big with this latest attack.
Several months back, VisorboyHokie posted a Le Monde article describing how French journalists embedded with Médecins Sans Frontières smuggled tissue samples out of Syria to be tested at an independent lab. The results (positive for Sarin) of those tests went straight to the UN. I'll see if I can find it.

Thanks for that information, Once.
Whatever the source, it's evil in evil hands.
How long before Al Qaeda or a surrogate gets a taste?
I know, our President says Al Qaeda is finished. I'll believe that when Sean Smith's mother gets paid
a tiny bit of respect.
