Lost my dog last night.

Very sudden thing; last night our 12 year old basset got up on the couch and just started climbing all over Mrs. Poly. Her heart was racing and she was trembling and starting to drool. So we decided we needed to take her to the emergency vet, thinking maybe bloat (apparently fairly common for bassets).
X-rays at the vet suggested it was internal bleeding, not bloat, so called for surgery to address what was assumed to be a tumor. No idea how large the tumor, benign or malignant, but just a few minutes after surgery started, we got the call that you never want to take - cancer in multiple organs (kidney, liver, spleen). So about 3 hours after just having had her at the park, and having enjoyed her dinner, our sweet little girl had passed.
Sure feels like a punch to the gut. And our 20 year old cat is right at her end, too - I'm anticipating today is the day for her as well (got that cat in Blacksburg). Rosie was the singularly most joyful being I've ever met, and brought that joy to everyone she ever met. We had the pleasure of having her for 12 years, though that sure seems like a short amount of time now.
Enjoy every moment with them.
