Rock questions for Kong

Post by RiverguyVT »

Last week, hiking the smokeys, I saw some rocks I wanted to ask you about.

The first one was white as snow. Almost w a waxy shine to it. Most of what I thought I was seeing was granite or shale-like rock. Greys and browns everywhere. Very hard stuff (as was this white one). Then this white rock all by its lonesome and striking because it was different from everything else we were commonly seeing. Was this white rock soapstone? Marble? Scale is funny. It is much bigger than a basketball.

Next, was a grey stone with tiny white flecks in it (I am assuming flecks of whatever that white rock was?). Would this have indicated some sort of igneous situation, and then metamorphic? What would have blistered the white rock into specks only to then be surrounded by the blue-grey(granite?)?

Third one. Am I looking at a fossil here? Interesting shiny bluish (slate like) leaf (shell fish?) shaped pattern on some of that very hard (I’m assuming granite?) hard brownish bluish gray rock. And again, with those white flecks.

Trying to attach 3 pics.
Thanks for your help! I’m trying to raise my rock game before heading up to Manicouagan in a few weeks. :geek:

TIA!!!

#1 Sandstone
#2 Schist
#3 Could be a fossil in Sandstone. Many fossils in Cades Cove.

This may help with with some information.

If you want igneous (volcanic rock) check out Mt Rogers...you can still see the lava domes.

So I'm clear.
The granular stone is schist, and the bright white one was sandstone? Or, other way around (white is schist, and granular is sandstone)?

Fossil- we were near Henwallow falls. But I imagine the geology is similar to Cades Cove.

Igneous- interestingly, there is volcanic history right beside Manicouagan, at 9 o'clock on the lake, just west of mt Babel on the mainland side.. I want to hike in there, if there's time.
