I'm accepting a job offer on Monday
My current boss has a rep for not taking these things too well. Oh well.

Good for you. Hopefully he'll be a man and just say congratulations.nolanvt wrote:My current boss has a rep for not taking these things too well. Oh well.
I can't even begin to tell you how many people I hear are changing jobs now. It is like everyone was buried deep, waiting out the cluster F of an economy and are finally get the nerve up to look around. I wish I still owned my headhunting business, as I am sure that business is off the chart now.

Logically, there's no reason my boss should be upset. I'm getting a significant increase in pay (since I'm pretty much nearing completion of my CPA), much better benefits and PTO, and the company takes off the week between Christmas and New Year's. It became a slam dunk after meeting with the other members of the Accounting department over the last two interviews (had 3 total) and hanging out with some of them at lunch yesterday. I mesh really well with them, and most of them have been there for a while to ease any concerns about lack of stability.Bay_area_Hokie wrote:Good for you. That being said, I've been told by my formal colleagues (who have already left) to expect my boss to originally counter with a ridiculous counter offer just to present the idea that they actually want me to stay, and after I decline, he'll act like I betrayed him. It's really a dysfunctional organization, which is probably why the entire Accounting department completely turned over (besides me) within three years on the job.

Thanks. My current boss actually took it pretty well once I laid out my reasoning (kept everything positive).GCHokie78 wrote:Congratulations. Good luck with your boss and with the new job.nolanvt wrote:My current boss has a rep for not taking these things too well. Oh well.

Re: I'm accepting a job offer on Monday
Congrats to Nolan. Not sure about the rest of the country but not great for jobs in Charlotte the last few years and this year is the worst I have seen it. Yes, there are some jobs available but I have been looking to make a change for a couple of years and there is just not a lot of open positions, (small to mid-size company controller). The ones I see (I look weekly) are extremely specific on skills and the pay rates are down significantly. While I am getting paid well I am looking for a shorter commute and a company with a better future than this one but I will keep trying as it has to turn around at some point.

Re: I'm accepting a job offer on Monday
good luck on the resignation meeting, I have had a couple of those with volatile bosses, and it is nerve racking but it sounds like you are leaving a not great situation for something much better and that is a good thing.

Congratulations on the new job. It sounds like a great opportunity.nolanvt wrote:My current boss has a rep for not taking these things too well. Oh well.
It sounds like you did a good job with the exit as well. Sometimes it's more important how you leave then how you come in.

Agreed. I decided even if they trash me behind the scenes (they've trashed other good former employees who left on good terms in my presence), someone has to step up and be the grown up in the situation. It's been relatively amicable so far.TheH2 wrote:Congratulations on the new job. It sounds like a great opportunity.nolanvt wrote:My current boss has a rep for not taking these things too well. That's good to hear. Of course there is a standard rule in business that all problems for the next 3 months will be blamed on you. Don't worry. It happens to everyone.
I learned early in my career not to give too much notice. I always thought that 2 weeks was for blue collar peeps and as a professional I should give at least a month to allow my employer to have a better transition. On my first job out of college I saw someone give 3 weeks notice and they were told to pack their stuff and be out by the end of the day. After that I never gave more than 2 weeks... and I made sure I was ready to leave if I was told to leave that day (as in had my files all backed up, my personal things packed that I didn't want my company arguing were company property, etc).

FYI, be careful doing this in the future. It isn't hard for companies to monitor this now. Any documents being saved to a hard drive can be identified and a large amount of files can raise a flag. Far better to have a personal thumb drive and periodically save stuff to it with the good excuse of working from home.

Re: I'm accepting a job offer on Monday
Every employee had a personal admin drive. I had all the spreadsheets I had created for the company to use to do engineering calculations stored there, databases of bids, cost estimates, etc. I burned that folder to a CD. Drawings of facilities I had designed had already been burned to CD's over the years as a backup to the backup. I just made sure I had all that stuff already burned to CD's before I gave my notice.
Things like my personal calculator, scales, pens, textbooks, etc and other office supplies (that I had purchased with my own money over the years) were slowly taken home as well in case I was shown the door. I didn't want to get in a debate of who owned a scale or a book, etc when I knew I had purchased them with my own money.

Re: I'm accepting a job offer on Monday
I resigned from a job three weeks ago, gave three weeks notice, and was totally prepared to be walked out the door. If my old company feels like you are going to a competitor, they escort you out right away. The didn't feel I was going to a competitor, so tomorrow is the final day of the three weeks and the new job starts Monday.burgrugby wrote:Every employee had a personal admin drive. Last night I went to the new job for a meeting and I saw sitting on my new desk was a brand spanking new Mac Air laptop. My first Mac. I am pumped.
