Seeing Book of Mormon Tuesday night, and going to the US Open Wednesday night. Other than that, we're just going to hop around and do whatever. Was thinking about the Statue of Liberty tour, but I hear those things pretty much take up the bulk of your day.

I would recommend anywhere except from 32nd street to 47 street, particularly Times Square.

It's a clusterfork. I realize you will want to see TS if you've never been, but see it quick and get out. FYI - TS has Olive Garden and Red Lobster. It's not at all representative of the city. Food is overpriced and not very good.

Be sure to check out the Village. A day spent in Central Park is well spent. Take the L to Bedford Ave in Brooklyn. The NYU and CU areas are both fun, but I'm partial to CU and Harlem/morningside heights uptown.

And if you want to do the tourist thing, the Circle Line cruise is time better spent than the SOL (which is really in Jersey).

The night session at the US Open is a terrible value. Especially in the first week of the tournament when its guaranteed you won't see two ranked opponents playing each other (they cannot meet until the third round at the earliest). I would have recommended the day session pass. You can bounce around all of the courts and see everything except for Ashe Stadium (which will feature 2 noncompetitive women's matches and 1 noncompetitive men's match). Though I can understand you probably have other things you want to see during the day, if you do the US Open's that the best way to do it.

I saw Book of Mormon back in March and thought it was fantastic. Hope you enjoyed the show.

Edit - I see now that you're referring to next week, which would be quarterfinals - so Ashe is your only real option. Disregard my comments unless you ever decide to go back during the first week or middle weekend

You can get tickets to the 9/11 Memorial Garden online, which will allow you to skip the enormous line. They're a few dollars but well worth the investment.

IP is right - avoid Times Square. Walk through once, take your pictures as quickly as you can, and get out. It's just a mess and doesn't have anything worth checking out.

Book of Mormon is great. Enjoy your trip.

1) Trash being set out on the sidewalks - no better sanitary system for trash pickup?
2) Living in DC, I'm used to people behaving like adults on the metro. Not sure if we were on a 'bad line', but the ride on the 2 train from Penn Station to Wall St. had some... interesting folks on it blaring rap music about how one mother F'n n-word was going to get capped for something. Small sample size, so I won't project to the rest of the NYC population.

Going to was up and hit up The Book of Mormon this evening.

My experience riding the Metro in DC was that quite a few people behave like children. Particularly when boarding and exiting the trains. People shoulder check and thrust elbows just to get on one person earlier. The worst were the people that would walk up the side of the train as it was arriving and then cut in front of the dozen or so people already standing in front of the doors. I can't believe I never saw someone get decked for doing that.

My experiences in NYC were always non-rush hour, so it's not exactly apples to apples. Definitely saw more "characters" and they allowed performers to sing/dance/whatever and then ask for money. Overall, I didn't notice much difference other than the NYC trains were more efficient/on time (though their platforms often smelled like piss).

IP was right. Must be a lot of necks, or NYecks, in Times Square. Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Ruby Tuesday... where are the good places to eat?

If you insist on eating down there, Thalia on 50th and 8th avenue is good.

Alfies bar on 53rd and 9th has a good burger and Shiner on tap.
