Just read, the Fall of Giants by Ken Follett.

Pretty good.

Not quite as good as Pillars of the Earth, but pretty good.

I was a little bothered by what seemed to be a left leaning ideology evidenced throughout the writing. I wasn't sure if it was the author's bias coming through, or if he was projecting that bias into the characters given be the tumultuous time of the novel.

I read some reviews that others have written about the second book in this trilogy, and they say that the liberal bias comes through loud and clear in the next edition.

Pity.

TM2, did you read this one?

I bought the book, thinking it was about the autumn season for the football team in New York.

Oh well.

Not that one. I haven't read enough of his books. Pillars is great, I read it as slowly as possible to savor every word. And it amazed me how he wrapped it up in the last 10 pages of a 980 page book. Have you read 'On Wings of Eagles'? True story about Ross Perot's team rescuing 2 of their employees in Iran. We know several former Thunderbird pilots who have worked for Ross in Dubai. They are very competent people.

Haven't read it. I'm into the follet sorta stuff. Disappointed that he seems to be politicizing his work, because I love history, and I like fiction. The fall of giants was great for me, because I have always been fascinated by that time in history. WWI, the rise of communism, fascinating.

I was always a bit embarrassed about my lack of knowledge and understanding of wwi.

I am slightly less embarrassed now. Slightly.

Total liberal slant continues throughout the trilogy as in Nixon was a crook with no redeeming value, Regan was a Mass murderer and Bush was ineffectual and an idiot.
Carter of course portrayed as a genius. (!) Kennedy could do no wrong (Bay of Pigs failed DUE TO CONSERVATIVES?!!) All democrats portrayed as sublime. Conservative victories were ignored or denigrated ( Regan had no effect o the Berlin Wall it was all Gorbachev) The book becomes a collection of liberal pot shots that really diminishes the story since it is clearly the author's bias and not the character's,.

When I lived in Europe, I shocked to learn that almost everyone I talked to credited Gorbachev with the end of Soviet Communism. Few gave Reagan any of the credit, and many didn't even know who he was. I was flabbergasted, but this is what made me realize just how pervasive liberal ideology is throughout Europe. Its like an entire continent of MSNBC viewers. This is one of the main differences between socialism/liberalism and American conservatism. Liberalism is truly an international movement, and has been since WWII, where as American conservatism is somewhat unique to the United States of America. Canada's conservative movement is probably the closest thing to American conservatism in the rest of the world, and then maybe UK's version after that. But there's really nothing like it on the main Continent of Europe.

Yes, I didn't really notice any liberal slant in the first two books. But the clear bias against Reagan and other conservatives of the era were annoying. I get that Georgie, the Civil Rights guy, wouldn't be anything other than a Democrat but still...

As a whole, a very great series but putting a liberal slant on more modern day folks was annoying. I'd re-read the WWI and WWII stuff because it was awesome and painted a very interesting political picture but wouldn't re-read the 3rd...
