Well I tell ya the Hokies have far exceeded my expectations

Post by Major Kong »

this year on the hardwood.

8-8, 16-13 with a chance to finish 10-8, 18-13 for the regular season.

Not having to play the opening night of the tournament after being picked 14th...good stuff this year.

We have clenched no worse than the #10 seed (which gets us a first round bye.) If we win out, we likely get the #6 seed. (We could actually tie for 4th, but due to tiebreakers could do no better than 6th seed.)

Subject to change as soon as another game is played, here's my guess as to what happens:

1. Miami (14-4)
2. UVA-C (13-5)
3. UNC (13-5) - (W Syr, L @Dook)
4. Dook (12-6) - (W WFU, W UNC)
5. Notre Dame (11-7) - (L scUM, W NCSU)
6. Clemson (10-8) - (L UVA, W @BC) - beat Pitt head-to-head to win tiebreaker
7. Pitt (10-8) - (W @VT, L @GT)
8. Syracuse (9-9) - (L @UNC, L @FSU)
9. Virginia Tech Hokies (8-10) - (L Pitt, L scUM) - wins tiebreaker by beating GT and FSU
10. Georgia Tech (8-10) - (L Loserville, W Pitt) - beat FSU head-to-head
11. Florida State (8-10) - (W Syracuse) - lost to both teams tied with
12. NCSU (5-13)
13. Wake Forest (2-16)
14. Boston College (0-18)

So that means:

Round 1:
12:00 #12 NCSU vs #13 WFU
2:00 #11 FSU vs #14 BC

Round 2:
12:00 #8 Syracuse vs #9 Virginia Tech
2:00 #5 ND vs NCSU/WFU
7:00 #7 Pitt vs #10 GT
9:00 #6 Clemson vs FSU/BC

Round 3:
12:00 #1 Miami vs SU/VT
2:00 #4 Dook vs ND/NCSU/WFU
7:00 #2 UVA-C vs Pitt/GT
9:00 #3 UNC vs Clemson/FSU/BC

Semifinals:
7:00 Miami/SU/VT vs ND/Dook/NCSU/WFU
9:00 UVA-C/Pitt/GT vs UNC/Clemson/FSU/BC

Finals:
Miami/SU/VT/ND/Dook/NCSU/WFU vs UNC/Pitt/GT/UVA-C/Clemson/FSU/BC

Where's our update, and by how many points are we going to crush Miami?!

I recall reading a couple of the hot takes on TOOB that Buzz wasn't all that good of a coach, as if the guy didn't make 5 NCAA tournaments in 6 years (including an Elite 8 in his fifth year).

Probably some of the same folks who now have us going to the NCAAs.

If we win zero or one more, we are bound for the NIT. If we win two more, I would have said "maybe", but with all of the upsets, there just aren't enough at-large spots that we could possibly get one. I think we would have to win it all to get a bid.

That said, winning it all is not outside the realm of possibilities. There isn't really a team in the conference that we wouldn't at least have a chance of beating.

It's a lot to ask BD. We'd have to win four games in four days against what will probably be a deeper and better rested team.

Personally, I think we should be in the conversation if we make it to the finals, but I've learned to expect to be disrespected by the selection committee. Maybe that all ended when Seth left, but I will assume it still plays.

We'll get there. It won't happen overnite, but I'm excited for our BB team's future.

We should be. I watched them in the beginning of the year, and in the end and the tournaments. They improved so much. I think that is the players buying into a good coaching program, and all those kids are coming back. I can see how Buzz brought his Marquette teams to elite 8 and s16 appearances. Let's see if he can recruit.
