Anyone watching baseball CWS? UVa is 2-0.

Post by oaktonhokie »

I like uva, as long as they are not playing us.

Really good pitching. They have tried to blow both games so far (blew a sac bunt opty in game one, then lined into DP) and in game two, an easy boot by the ss allowed a run to score.

They aren't hitting all that well, no one is.

But their pitching is very good.

Yeah their pitching has shutdown 2 pretty good teams...they get the Ole Miss-TCU winner Thursday. Vandy is undefeated in the other bracket.

'Hoo's 4-1 over Ole Miss and into the final round. They will take on the Vandy-Texas winner in a best of 3 starting Monday.

Pet peeve about that messed up sacrifice bunt attempt early on.

Popped it up with runners on 1st and 2nd. Next guy hit a grounder to deep short that was a double play. Would have scored a run with a good sacrifice. Oh well, pitching wins. And they have surely got that.

Sac bunting is a pet peeve of mine. If you're only playing for one run (e.g. tie game in the bottom of the 9th inning or later), that's fine, but it's generally a play that reduces run expectancy.

So much for the yahoos great pitching staff. Their ace walked five in the third inning.

Add a couple hits and an error and thats a nine run inning for Vanderbilt.

When is game two?

UVA's sac bunt in the 8th tonight is a textbook example of #smrtbaseball. It's a smart play if you're playing for one run, and UVA got one run.

UVA 7-2 over Vandy. Game 3 tonight for all the marbles.

The 'Hoos were down 2-1 going into the 6th..they scored 3 in the 6th, 2 in the 7th and pushed home 1 in the 9th.

I agree, mostly.

But the manager knows his players and the opposition better that I do. If he's bunting his #9 hitter (who has been hot, btw) to set up the top of the order, i'm ok with that.

Too many managers imo, give away outs in the middle of the line up to advance one base. That pretty much removes the chance of a big inning.

And if you're supposed to sacrifice, don't screw it up. Pet peeve #372, hitters who mess up two strikes trying to sacrifice and then pop up to first base.

The inning from hell in game one (five walks, pet peeve number one) and nine runs.

Sorry they lost. I like the team.

Twice in the final series did UVA sac bunt with runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. On the SABR side of things, this play generally reduces run expectancy. I don't know what the final tally was, but after Game 1, only once out of nine attempts did a team score both runners when sac bunting with runners on 1st and 2nd (per linked tweet). To supplement the SABR argument, I believe, as a former pitcher, once you can get an out after getting hit a couple times, there's a non-zero element that boosts your confidence and can get you to settle down and make better pitches. So, when the first two hitters in an inning reach base, don't bail out the pitcher by giving up one of your three outs.
