After 8 years of expansion, us job recovery slowing in 2017

Post by fatman »

Nothing goes up forever, perhaps following such a long, long, long stretch of employment growth some slowdowns in 2017 were to be expected. Despite the loss of economic momentum we've seen in 2017, Unemployment rates are still very low by historical standards. They haven't been this low since the Clinton years.

The theme of seeing demand for jobs not being met by trained supply of workers has been an issue during the tail end of the massive employment expansion. It is curious that the us isn't embarking on job training programs that are so successful in Germany. I know some in private industry are doing just that in the us. Without corporate funded job training, hiring managers have to turn to skilled visa holders or outsourcing jobs to countries that have a supply of trained workers.
