New York State will sue to block President Trump’s plan to stop taxpayers from deducting state and local taxes if it passes, Gov. Cuomo said Tuesday.

Trump’s sweeping tax reform plan includes a proposal that would end the deduction, which Cuomo says would amount to a tax hike for many New Yorkers who itemize their taxes.

“We believe the new federal tax plan, if it goes through, is double taxation, and we will sue the federal government if they do that,” Cuomo said at a press conference at his Midtown office where he decried multiple “federal assaults on the state of New York,” which also include health care cuts.

“We’re not going to allow this state to be attacked and assaulted grossly and unfairly,” Cuomo said. “We will sue on the deductibility provision if it stays in at the end of the day.”

N.Y. sent D.C. $41B more than state received in services in 2016

An analysis by Cuomo’s office predicted that in New York City, the 1.1 million residents who claim the deduction would see an average tax increase of $7,134.

Statewide, the change would result in an average $5,298 tax increase for the 3.3 million taxpayers who claim the deduction on their federal tax returns. In total, the impact would add up to $17.5 billion statewide.

The state has also threatened to sue over a variety of other controversial Trump proposals.

People who take the standard deduction would not be affected.

“It is an attempt by the federal government, purposeful or coincidental, to make New York and several other states actually less competitive for businesses and people,” Cuomo said. “If you raise our taxes, you make New York less competitive.”

Cuomo slams Trump’s tax reform plan as ‘devastating for New York'

The state has also threatened to sue over a variety of other controversial Trump proposals, including the repeal of Obamacare which ultimately failed and Trump’s move to end protections for young immigrants brought to the country illegally as children.

The tax bill is a long-term tax increase if you consider the sunset provisions in the Senate bill. You should be excited at all the government functions you will get to support even more than ever.

Really getting tired of the whiney ass New Yorkers like Cuomo B&Ming about every little thing that doesn't go their way. The courts need to tell him (and NY) to go F themselves; it's a congressional decision and if they don't like it then take it up with congress, not the courts. The guy is a partisan hack and a joke.

Spending money does.

Yep. I've said/thought that about 100 times over the last 3 or 4 weeks listening to people talk about the debt and tax reform.

No one, and I mean no one, is talking about the expense side. Of course, that also includes the people putting together the tax bill. It's all pretty meaningless until someone, anyone, puts together a budget that reduces government spending. And that's not going to happen until SS and Medicare get reformed.

As for raising money, I'm not sure how that applies to this tax bill. It's not going to raise taxes, except on those ppl that Trump doesn't like.

I thought socialists liked high taxes.

You know, redistribution, punish the successful.

Gotta fund sanctuary cities and pay the illegals for education, medication and incarceration.

Fairness.

Yeh, I know, there are people in CA who have talked about seceding. Same goes for Texas, although a much larger group.

As for schooling, you might want to try again. NY, as a state, is right in the middle of the pack. Illinois is top 15. Cali is middle of the pack. The top states are all states you would consider liberal. The bottom states are all SEC country. Of course, VA is near the top also.
You don't know what you're talking about. If being triggered is calling you out on your silly, and incorrect, statements, sure, I'm triggered by your nonsense.

New York will sue to block Trump's tax reform plan if it passes, Cuomo says

NY and kali should just secede, kali is going to burn to the ground anyways
Despite partisan douchebags like you, I still support states like Cali and NY subsidizing the southeast and mid-atlantic parasites who can't educate enough of their residents to support themselves.
It's people who think like you that have turned our politics into a laughingstock.
What's source of that assertion?
Which assertion?

The education assertion is based on studies of literacy and educational attainment, there are tons of them. The southeast states as a whole are at the bottom.

As for the subsidy assertion, same thing, there are lots of studies done comparing the amount of federal taxes states pay out, and federal dollars they spend. CA and NY take less fed money than they pay out. And again, most, if not all of the southeast states are net takers.

Yeh, I know, there are people in CA who have talked about seceding. Same goes for Texas, although a much larger group.

No, because it leads you to silly, pre-conceived but erroneous narratives.

New York's got no case. If this bill is so harmful for New Yorkers then Albany could always pass a tax cut to make up the difference.
I don't care if you're a Democrat or a Republican... if you refuse to consider alternatives to the two parties, you support the Status Quo and you are a major part of the problem.

It’s not double taxation as long as the state and federal taxes aren’t being used for the same services.
I don’t think it has anything to do with NY ability to pass a tax cut.

Huh? who said anything about double taxation, CPA's point is that NY can cut their state tax for the difference that not being able to deduct state taxes makes in a persons fed tax return and thus the person is not harmed by living in a state that taxes the crap out of you. The whole argument is idiotic though as the tax proposals jack the standard deduction way up and very few people will itemize anymore on the fed return, so state taxes are a not needed figure

This is of course the opinion of a partisan douchebag

You should try and keep up, or at least read the article. You seem to have missed this key sentence,

“We believe the new federal tax plan, if it goes through, is double taxation, and we will sue the federal government if they do that,”

The crux of any suit brought concerning the removal of the deduction is double taxation. Any discussion about the merits of the suit center around the double taxation issue.
Your ignorance on this and all the other issues you brought up in this thread may or may not have to do with partisan douchebaggery. I’m really not sure though.

I agree with you that standard deduction will mitigate a lot.

Sorry the article is so pathetically wrong, its not double taxation in the least, your ignorance of common sense is sad, never mind the douchebaggery
